iPad App Review: Thumbs

thumbs app

Rating: ★★★½☆

As you will probably know, the iPad and the iPhone have a unique way of organising the applications that are on the devices. The apps are organised on a variety of screens and each of the apps has a particular thumbnail that will represent the application. The name of the app is usually written next to the thumb and then when you click on the thumb in order to launch that particular app. Now, there has been an app released that uses this same sort of thumbnail based browsing system in order to allow you to browse your favourite websites and web pages. This iPad app is called Thumbs for iPad.

Although it might sound like a bit of a strange idea and that it really isn’t necessary, it really does make browsing your favourite websites a lot easier. When you launch the app, you will notice that the overall design of the app is rather simple and that there hasn’t been that much thought put into the design, however, this is fine as the app is actually a basic idea; it is just executed extremely well. In the app, you will be presented will a screen that looks similar to the home screen of the iPad or iPhone, the only difference is that the thumbs are actually links to your favourite websites. This is a great idea and it actually allows you to see a small preview of the website that you could click on before you actually click on it. The thumbs are laid out in a really nice way and you will have no trouble seeing the sites that you have as a favorite. thumbs screenshot

One of the great things about this application is that you can actually create as many thumbs inside the app as you want. If you like, you could actually make thousands of different thumbs and then save them all on the app. As well as being able to do this, you can actually organise the thumbs into categories, much like you would with your favourites in a normal browser. This means that you could organise your thumbs into certain folders, perhaps for different people or perhaps for business and leisure. Another great feature of this app is that you can actually organise the thumbs in a variety of ways, You can organise them alphabetically, or in a number of other ways and this really makes the app extremely versatile.

Perhaps the best feature of the app is that you can actually create the thumbs yourself. This means that you can create the picture that is on the thumbs so that you will really know which sites you are going to be visiting. Also, when you click a thumb, the website will open up within the app and getting back to your list of thumbs takes just a few seconds.

Overall, this is a great and unique application that will allow you to organise your favourite websites in a new way and it is well worth the few dollars it costs.
